Today is World Mental Health Day (October 10th). The overall objective of this day is to raise awareness of mental health diseases and bring light to the efforts that support these diseases.
How many of you actually knew today was WMHD without seeing someone else post about it, though? I’ll be the first to admit that I had know idea that’s what today was. Why is that? Why is this day not significant enough to be well known? I believe it’s because this falls under the “hard to talk about” category and what this blog is all about: talking about the hard stuff.
Now that I’m aware of what today is, does that make today anymore valuable than tomorrow? Or yesterday? Nope, it sure doesn’t. Why? Because every day should be a day we fight and recognize mental health diseases.
Most of you know by now that I struggle daily with my severe anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Today isn’t about making people aware that I have these diseases. Neither is tomorrow, or the next day. I only share my experiences in hopes to help someone else with their own journey.
There isn’t enough widespread education on mental health available. What is anxiety? Why is it different for everyone? Why isn’t it treatable? All of these questions can be answered with a quick google search and reading through some research articles, but why don’t we already know the answers?
What are your thoughts on today? Is society too afraid to talk about mental health? Will the stigma around mental health ever disappear? Why are people embarrassed to speak about their experiences? Tell me what you think 👇🏻
My thoughts on today is that we shouldn’t have a day devoted to mental health awareness, it should be something we do every day! If we do this every day then real progress will be made! Thanks for sharing!
